Can you tame a hawk companion in 'Red Dead Redemption' on Rockstar Games that scouts enemy camps?

RDR’s wilderness needs aerial scouts, and a camp-scouting hawk fits. Is the hawk unlocked after rescuing a chick from a snake? Does it fly ahead to mark enemy positions on John’s map, dive-bomb guards to distract them, and can retrieve small loot (like coins) from distant areas?
